Relaxation is essential for your mental and physical well being and can help with:
Managing stress and anxiety
Slowing heart rate.
Lowering blood pressure.
Slowing your breathing rate.
Improving digestion.
Maintaining normal blood sugar levels.
Reducing activity of stress hormones.
Protecting from depression.
Increasing blood flow to major muscles.
Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain.
Boosting your memory.
Lowering your risk of catching a cold.
Activities such as reading a good book, lying on the sofa and watching a film or sitting in the sun by a pool may leave you feeling more rested but will they really relax you? The short answer is 'no' they won't, at least not effectively. True relaxation of mind and body, that helps aid recovery from the damaging effects of stress needs to be both muscular and mental.
There is an abundance of activities that can help you achieve true relaxation. From meditation to massage, you need to choose one that suits you. In the long term though it's important to find a relaxation technique that you can make part of your daily life, rather than something that may become too difficult or too expensive to continue.
